There is one product in your makeup arsenal that can make you appear more beautiful, more alert, and even sexier. What is it? Here’s a hint: It highlights the windows to your soul. By now I’m sure you’ve got it: eye shadow. The good news continues. Not only is eye shadow inexpensive and easy to use, it can also be one of the most creative parts of your beauty routine. Awaken the artist within with our top five tips for using this beauty powerhouse.

1. Timing is everything
When you apply your eye shadow has everything to do with how long it lasts and how good it looks. The best time to swipe on color is after you’ve applied your foundation and powder, but before you’ve done any other eye makeup (eyeliner, mascara, false lashes).

2. Anchor it well
Most beauty experts recommend anchoring eye shadow with either powder or an eye shadow primer. This will guarantee that your shadow stays in place during the day, instead of making a mass exodus towards your eye fold and staying there. If you have oily skin, a primer can work best for this. If you have normal or dry skin, applying a sweep of powder to your upper eye and the area below your brow bone can also do the trick.

3. Choose two shades
This is your chance to get creative and choose colors that highlight the beauty already being broadcasted by your eyes. You want to aim for two different colors here that complement your natural eye color. Many brown eyes pop when accentuated by jewel tones, and blue eyes can look stunning in gray or purple. Several brands offer pre-packaged eye shadow palettes that are optimized for your eye color. Or, do some research and find colors on your own that look spectacular. The key is to choose two shades for your eyes. Read on for tips on applying those shades.

4. Apply your base color
The lighter of the two colors you’ve chosen is going to be your base color. Sweep a layer of this base color along your upper eyelid and the area below your eyebrow. For extra definition, add a dollop of color above the inside corner of your eye, where it connects with your nose. This look is especially riveting when you use iridescent eye shadow.

5. Finish with your accent color
After you’ve finished applying your base color, move on to the darker of the two shades you’ve chosen. This color will be applied to the outer half of your eyelid. Blend it into your base color near the middle of your eyelid, where the two colors meet. For a night-time, dramatic look, concentrate more pigment of this darker shadow on the very outside of your eyelid. This will help your eyes look even larger and will bookmark the iridescent shadow on the inside corner of your eye.

All it takes is a few simple strokes of color and eye shadow can help your eyes come alive. Don’t forget to finish your look with eyeliner, mascara, and even some false lashes. Incredible eyes, here we come!
