When it comes to makeup, applying foundation can mean the difference between blotchy skin and an even, finished look. That’s why we compiled a list of our top five tips for applying foundation. Better looking skin is just a product away.

1. Don’t forget the primer
One of the best things you can do to help your foundation last the entire day is to pair it with a good primer. Primer goes on after your moisturizer but before your foundation and creates a smooth surface for makeup to adhere to. Those with oily skin will notice that oil-reducing primer will cut down on shininess throughout the day and help foundation stay in place. Those with dry skin should notice less flaky skin showing through their foundation. Primer can also fill in fine lines and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

2. Let your skin type be your guide
Let your skin type be your guide when choosing a foundation. The right one for you will depend on whether your skin is dry, oily, or combination (you have spots of dryness and spots of oiliness). Those with dry skin should choose liquid or stick foundation, which has more moisturizers and can hydrate skin throughout the day. Those with oily skin should opt for an oil-free liquid or powder foundation to soak up excess oil and avoid clogging the pores. Mineral makeup is also good for oily skin. For combination skin, you may want to use a combination of products or stick with a powder, which will blend more easily than a liquid.

3. Choose the right color
The best color of foundation for you will always be the exact color of your skin (or as close as possible). When trying foundation, select three different shades and spread a stripe of each one from your chin to your neck. Look at the three stripes in natural light, noticing how they work with the skin on your face and the skin on your neck. Which one blends into your natural skin the best? That’s your winner.

4. Blend, blend, blend
Applied wrong, foundation can look like a mask. The best way to avoid that is to properly blend your foundation. Some people prefer to use sponges or foundation brushes, but the fingertips also work great. Spread foundation evenly toward your hairline and eyes, as well as down towards your neck. Never stop applying foundation at your jawline, where the color differential between your face and your neck can seem obvious. Instead, blend foundation to underneath the jaw. Just remember to also wash that area when you’re doing your nightly cleansing.

5. Set it properly
One of the biggest mistakes women make when applying foundation is to not set it properly. Once you’ve applied foundation, you should always dust over your face with a loose powder. This will go a long ways toward guaranteeing that your makeup stays in place and will also help to fight shine throughout the day. Remember, foundation is just that, a foundation. Make sure to add a layer of powder for a beautiful, finished look.
